Johnson & Griffiths (J&G) is a full service art conservation, architectural restoration & decorative arts studio. Our experienced team of artists, artisans & conservators develops tailored solutions to unique decorative arts challenges.
In 2007, Jeffrey B. Johnson and his wife Norah Griffiths Johnson established Johnson and Griffiths Studio LLC to create and conserve fine art; conduct color analysis and color consultations and to design, decorate and restore interiors. Their vision is to work in the artisan studio and workshop tradition, where independent designers and craftspeople can collaborate on decorative arts projects.
In 1987, Johnson was hired as a team member of Albert Michaels Conservation by AMC co-founder and conservator, John Rita. Mr. Rita is now the chief conservator at Johnson & Griffiths and brings with him more than 35 years of experience in conservation, paint analysis, ecclesiastical design and is a collaborator on selective interior design and mural projects.
From 2000 through 2010, Johnson was a partner and the director of operations at Albert Michaels. Some of the notable projects that Johnson managed for Albert Michaels during his tenure included: The U.S. Department of the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg, PA; the Hershey Theatre and Milton S. Hershey’s High Point Mansion, Hershey, PA; Nemours Estate, Wilmington, DE; The Old Governor’s Mansion of Georgia, Milledgeville, GA; Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA; Historic Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Lancaster, PA to name but a few.
Johnson & Griffiths specializes in the analysis, conservation, design and management of decorative finish projects of all kinds.
Conservation of fine art. J&G’s conservators have the philosophy that conservation is the perfect marriage of art and science. We bring with us the sensitivity of artists and the deliberation of scientists into every conservation challenge. Each conservation project begins with the assessment and documentation of the condition of the painting, object or decorative finish with which we have been entrusted. We are bound by the code of ethics and guidelines of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and are ever conscious of our role as caretakers of our cultural heritage.

Paint and color analysis. J&G takes a very holistic and integrated approach to paint analysis. We believe it is critically important to understand and to have working experience in all aspects of paint analysis and the decorative arts. All of our principals related to paint analysis possess working knowledge and years of experience in the decorative arts and paint analysis. Chief microscopist, Theodore Holland, has more than 25 years of decorative arts and painting conservation experience. Additionally, Holland trained at the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where he completed training courses on forensic examination of building materials, photomicrography, and microscopy for conservators. John Rita is not only a Professional Associate with the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), but also is an artist with more than 35 years of experience in decorative painting and microscopical analysis experience. Jeffrey Johnson has more than 25 years of experience in the decorative arts, conservation and microscopic analysis. Over the past 25 years, Holland, Rita and Johnson have worked together on such projects as: The Pennsylvania State Capitol Building, U.S. Department of Treasury Building, Hershey Theatre, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Historic St. Mary’s, Lancaster, PA…
Color consultations. Color selection is one of the most daunting aspects of any design project. Whether choosing a color for a historic structure or for your home, we can help.
Design. J&G has more than 35 years of experience in ecclesiastical, commercial, restaurant, and residential interior design. Although our interior design projects are incredibly diverse, we have one guiding ethos: bring out the inherent and unique beauty of a space and enhance it without overpowering it through the use of art, color and design elements.
A few of the projects to which J&G has contributed design services include:
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glen Rock, PA; SS Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Punxsutawney, PA; U.S. Treasury Building, Washington, D.C.; Historic Peter Allen House, Dauphin, PA; The Greek restaurant, State College, PA
